Things to Avoid in a Eulogy

dan ruth · June 19, 2023 certified reviewer
"Eulogy" is a very sharp, sincere and highly entertaining play about trauma, survival and love. The outstanding dialogue really rises in this very well-written two-hander set in New York City, featuring two outstanding female actors. I was wrapped by this piece from the start, all the way to the final fade to black. The dark subject matter did not stop me or the audience from laughing out loud at this plays honesty. Fantastic show.... full review

Prince Harry: Live! At Coachella

You can't get any Fringier than this solo performance musical, based on the life of Prince Harry. With its hilarious title and the idea behind it, "PHL@C" is unapologetically silly and fun; there's nothing to be learned here, unless you really start reading into it (I mean, the real guy can't seem to get a break). Chris Chianesi's high-energy creation is masterful, his techno visuals are vividly appropriate and I left humming the tunes. I really enjoyed this slice of escapism that runs way under ... full review

Flayed

Josiah Blount's powerhouse performance in "Flayed" is one of the best examples of solo show crafting I've ever witnessed. The show is chock-full of characters, each so clearly different, insanely and individually unwrapped, that following this actor into the pits of hell is an absolute joy. Giving any more away would be a sin but let's just say that "Flayed" and its incredible performer will keep you thinking and rehashing for quite some time, especially if, like me, you've had similar dark exper... full review

Sinatra: RAW

Frank Sinatra was never a thing with me, I always gravitated to others in the genre, so I was never really a fan but I am a huge fan of this incredible and mesmerizing show. I saw the show blind, only reading about it and the show's other accolades on my walk home. Richard Shelton who wrote and stars in "Sinatra: Raw" is an incredible actor, absolutely riveting and devilishly good-looking. He looks and sounds just enough like Frank that there are moments (like snapshots) that you leave thinki... full review

Naked Man Rising

An overall entertaining solo piece, featuring a strong performance by Kyle Durack. “Naked” works best when he is committed to the story and lost in his characters and in the moment. The result is a tale of life with disabilities and the beauty when one finds their outward and inner strength. Some fun comic moments, familiar characters and vivid imagery lift “Naked” to a higher level. The non-gratuitous nudity adds to the humanity and to the primal spirit that’s at the heart of this piece which t... full review

A Brooklyn Boy

Had the great honor of seeing Steven Prescod’s closing night performance of his upliftinging, razor-sharp solo play “A Brooklyn Boy.” Wonderful story, vivid imagery, energy and a beautiful spirit, soaring out of a young man raised on the streets of Bed Stuy, who was saved by art and theatre. What about that doesn’t sound like everything this country needs right now? Be on the look out for this show, New York City. Congratulations to you on sharing your important and inspirational story! Manson's Girls

The spot-on rock score by Ron Barnett drives this piece with some intense, memorable songs that the audience clearly loved. The cast was excellent and the energy was high, with some soaring voices and excellent harmonies. Tough material for a musical left my very entertained!... full review

Mutant Olive

This was my first HFF show, glad I saw it! High-energy, seedy explosion of Americana. Mitch Hara takes you into a world of bigotry, carelessness and desperation. Beautifully rendered, fun piece for actors who are more interesting than the parts they're often asked to portray.... full review
