“The personal becomes political in this collaboratively created new work from playwrights Andrea Scott and Nick Green. When racial and queer politics collide with the Black Lives Matter protest at the 2016 Toronto Pride Parade, two best friends discover that the things that brought them together may now drive them apart. A hilarious and heartbreaking stare-down of privilege and oppression”. Every Day She Rose highlights the loving, but growing tense relationship between two long time friends and roommates, Mark, a white gay man and Cathy-Ann, straight Jamaican Black woman. The story takes place in Toronto during the celebratory time of the annual gay Pride parade where a political intervention from a group of Black Lives Matter protesters stop the parade to address the ongoing issue of police brutality. The event stirs up a conversation between the friends which exposes that they aren’t exactly on the same page about what transpired, further testing an already shaky relationship. Alongside the internal, “fictional” conflict, the play breaks the fourth wall by exposing aspects of the writing process and dialogue between the playwrights Andrea and Nick, who are portrayed by the same actors. Content Warning: This play includes some foul language and mentions police brutality, hate crimes against the LGBTQ+, Latinx and Black community, misogynoir, gun violence, and sexual activities.
