Gregory Crafts and Theatre Unleashed production of "Tattered Capes" brings homage to prevalent and popular Marvel and DC Comic superhero films in a fresh, funny, and poignant new work after last year’s award-winning equally loving send up to the classic action heist, "A Very DIE HARD Christmas."
While celebrating their wedding anniversary, Kevin (Travis Joe Dixon) and Stephanie's (Joanna Mercedes) date is spoiled by a supervillain attack, resulting in the unmasking of Kevin as a superhero. However, what he soon learns is that Stephanie has a secret too. A super-fun (pun intended, obviously) romantic action piece about insecurity and deep love. I didn't see TC until Extensions and I now understand why it won BEST DANCE AND PHYSICAL THEATER - the use of shadowplay and combat sequences may not have been crucial to the plot, but they WERE crucial to the production. TATTER CAPES had a cinematic vibe while employing tried-and-true theatrical conventions, adding up to a unique yet comfortably familiar experience - cast (especially Dixon, Mercedes, and King) was outstanding, with great shadow work from the ensemble, and well-executed direction bringing locations to life without the use of video effects (which could easily have been employed as a catch-all). Theatre Unleashed has earned its reputation for consistently delivering Fringe hits, and this show does not deviate from that pattern. It was one of our Most Anticipated shows of HFF19, and was a truly different type of Fringe show for TU, proving that there is nothing they cannot do....

This is a fascinating exploration of all things superhero through the lens of a married couple who do not know that they are secretly both good guys. The most intriguing aspects of the show are hard to discuss without giving anything away but, in general terms, the show seems to explore the potential for tension in a relationship when it appears trust has been betrayed while it sends both characters through an emotional gauntlet that questions just what it might take to turn a good person into a bad one. ...
