The Board

When I read that this show was along the lines of Law & Order and Homeland, I was intrigued. Much to my enjoyment, I discovered that the story certainly did not disappoint. This riveting monologue (calling this a one-person show would be a disservice, short-selling the experience), delivered by the incredibly talented Sarah Hollis, transfixed me for the better part of an hour. Part of What I Love About Fringe: Artists Watch List I saw this phrase a lot: “Part of what I love about Fringe…..” and one of the parts is watching how artists develop over the years. I like to follow different creators in between Fringe as well, but many only produce for Fringe. Jaeger Christian is the biggest winner in this category. I was so excited by the idea of his 2014 piece (a new musical about PTSD) that seeing it was very disappointing. He needed a co-writer, a dramaturg, a director…..but something about his heart, his sincerity in the pre-show speech made me pause. It went beyond someone who believes in his work. It didn’t, however, save the show. So this year I noticed he has two solo shows, The Board and The Backpack.... full review

this was such a well done piece. well written, well acted, simple staging, yes, but a whole world flowed. honestly, i find it fascinating when someone else does a 'solo show' from someone else's words, but this monologue was expertly written and expertly played, and I sat in the theatre riveted the entire time. The subject matter (let's just say anything army, air force, navy, marines... or coast guard in this case) is way beyond my scope, however, I understood, and I was so glad I did. Vivid, real, transportive... and just happy I knew where to spend an hour of my time.... full review

Beautifully written and acted. I was very involved from start to finish. The monologue revolves around a court martial hearing - it could have been very dry and formal - instead it was engaging, drew me into the experience at the heart of the hearing with compassion and insight.
