THREE MUSKETEERERS, Clowns With Swords
Reviewed by Neal Weaver
The Actor’s Company
Through June 28.
RECOMMENDED:
Three agile and athletic but dim-witted clowns (Mauricio Gomez, Jeffrey Heapy and Alec Tomkiw) in whiteface and blue boots set out to tell their story. Their inept attempts to put on their costumes (Gomez zips himself in the zipper of his 16th Century pantaloons) make it clear that a sustained narrative is beyond their powers. Then a woman (Cassandra Gonzalez, alternating with Lisa Labella) arrives, bearing a sliver of plot: She has received a mysterious letter from Cardinal Richelieu that confers authority on its bearer. The three men try desperately to capture ...

A GOLD MEDAL TO THE CLOWNS!!
THE THREE MUSKETEERERS – CLOWNS WITH SWORDS (Gold Medal)
Mauricio Gomez as Pono, Jeff Heapy as Klaus, Alec Tomkiw as Hugo and Cassandra Gonzalez as Sookie are featured in this absolutely inspired broil of swashbuckling silliness and clowning in the truest sense of the word. As they gyrate and gambol about the stage, there is no missing in their performance the style and masterful physical tomfoolery of people who take clowning very seriously. Watching their antics one is almost intoxicated by the mirth.

The physicality was truly impressive. These people know how to clown. The story was limited, but time and clowning make that inevitable. It is well worth seeing!...

Clowns with Swords is a much meatier enterprise than most. No simple jesters allowed. Belly laughs will be scarce. Expect instead to be sufficiently captivated and sometimes appalled but ultimately entertained by this piece. #ChanceItLA - The caliber of training that the three men had was fantastic. Their physicality and clowning was outstanding. However, at the entrance of the girl, everything came screeching to a halt because her training paled in comparison. It was like taking a 2nd year French student, throwing them into a room with native speakers and telling them to blend in. It didn't work. It was obvious that she was trying her best, but there was no way for her to keep up. That coupled with the fact that their story meandered and they often spent too long on one gag, I say #SkipIt unless you want to give it a #ChanceIt with the other girl - the female part is alternated between two actresses....
