Fifty Shades of Shrew 100% delivers in their exploration of power and sex and BDSM via the lens of Taming of the Shrew. Super fun and exciting to watch! It definitely gives a new, fun element to all the banter between characters. AND it is filled with heart, including the most sympathetic Petruchio I have ever seen. The way that Kate and Petrucci come together in the end is the most uplifting, inspiring, on-par coupling I've seen accomplished in any production. This was a very spirited production with great energy. The scenes between Kate (Jennifer Albert) and Petruchio (Dawn Alden) had a subtle melancholy that was captivating. The cast worked wonderfully off of one another!... full review

The cast is great, first and foremost. Each lady sparkles in her role (or roles). And the show was cut well (not something that can be said about every Shakespeare production in Los Angeles). I'm also glad that no gender pronouns were changed, despite the all female cast, keeping the male terms added an interesting layer to what was being done. And the opening monologue of information, delivered by the luscious Mistress Kara and explaining the basics of BDSM, was fascinating. That being said, I do wish the BDSM in the show was a bit more risque, and done with a bit more seriousness. I wanted to be pushed to the edge of my comfort level, and I didn't quite get there. 50 Shades of Shrew is a great twist on the Shakespeare Classic. The set-up monologue as told to us by a BDSM mistress adds to the language of the play. The gender power stuggle is heightened with the cast of all female players - I especially enjoyed Dawn Alden and Jennifer Albert's (Petruchio & Kate's) exchanges. Taming of the Shrew has always been a guilty pleasure of mine, but not one that I liked to vocalize because of how easily it is perceived to be sexist. But because of FIFTY SHADES OF SHREW, I don't feel bad about saying this is now my favorite Shakespearean play! Adapting the show to a BDSM-style production is not only very entertaining, but amazingly appropriate. SPOILER ALERT: The ending where Katherina delivers her monologue about men's superiority to her fellow female entourage takes on a sexy, seductive nature that left the audience, and myself, hot and bothered! With Danielle Ozymandias's gifted direction and adaptation, one of Shakespeare's most familiar plays gets a brand-spanking (sorry, couldn't resist) new life with FIFTY SHADES OF SHREW. THE TAMING OF THE SHREW always makes me squirm a bit as one of the bard's best female characters seems to lose everything that makes her interesting. But in the context of BDSM, it now actually all makes sense. And I'll never see the original the same way again. It's a very strong all-female ensemble, but stand-outs include Dawn Alden's Petruchio, Jen Albert's Katharina, Tara Donovan's Bianca and Shana Gregory Williams's Tranio. Linda Muggeridge’s smart and sexy costumes are no small part of the entertainment quotient in this condensed all-female production of The Taming of the Shrew, which casts a benign and playful eye on BDSM. A fierce yet doleful Katharina (Jennifer Albert) makes her first appearance in slinky black leather while her supposedly doe-like sister Bianca (Tara Donovan) shows up in high heels, white stockings and a short frilly white skirt. When Petruchio (Dawn Alden), rolls in, the choleric Katharina drawn to him, despite herself. What a fun translation of Shakespeare! Competent actors, exorbitant costumes, and just the right amount of bawdy! Of particular note in this all female cast (a fun twist on Shakespeare for sure) were Tara Donovan as the "proper lady Bianca", dressed in white throughout, who we see come out of her shell in a classic role-reversal (emphasis on "reversal"0. Also, Sylvia Loehndorf as Grumio almost stole the show in a number of scenes with very few lines but spot-on Shakespearean interpretation of character.... full review
