I asked some shows if I could see a dress rehearsal. There’s no time to waste when Fringing. Director Corey Lynn Howe and her talented team bravely took me up on the offer. Heather Lake bounded into rehearsal with all the energy I expect from her past performances. Hugs all around, quite literally! Travis Dixon, playing Hunter, expressed some confusion over Hot Pockets and how to eat them on-stage without getting Hot Pocket mouth. Then they jumped into a run-through. This is a hilarious, sweet story told with unwavering enthusiasm by a very, very talented cast. In stark contrast with some other Fringe pieces- this is a polished, professional show. Just like that famous song from our youth, "this is how you do it." Corey Lynn Howe has directed a masterpiece that showcases the extremely talent cast in a show about the process of writing and staging a hit musical. I loved the inside references that most theater people will get. I especially loved the singing (go Heather Lake!), which is a good thing, since this is a musical. This show inspired me. The modest production requirements of [title of show] (“4 chairs… and a keyboard”) and the strong, playful, music theater cast assembled ironically allow this particular Hollywood Fringe show staging of a fringe show about the creation of a fringe show to avoid the negative connotations often associated with a fringe show.
