Part of What I Love About Fringe: Artists Watch List I saw this phrase a lot: “Part of what I love about Fringe…..” and one of the parts is watching how artists develop over the years. I like to follow different creators in between Fringe as well, but many only produce for Fringe. Jaeger Christian is the biggest winner in this category. I was so excited by the idea of his 2014 piece (a new musical about PTSD) that seeing it was very disappointing. He needed a co-writer, a dramaturg, a dire... full review

David and Leeman: How to Convincingly Fake Honesty

cindy marie jenkins · June 28, 2013 certified reviewer
Two charming gents perform magic amidst some hilarious bits. D&L have great chemistry and a wonderful way of making reluctant audience members join into their act without missing a beat. The space seemed a little too vast, but elegantly detailed scenery and props helped keep our focus. Their work was so well done that I wish they'd push it even more. Even so, if you're looking for a fun evening out with friends, FAKE HONESTY definitely delivers.... full review

all brown all chingon

The ABAC team present captivating stories mostly well told. Conflicting ideas of identity create both a dank and shining gem exploring masculinity. The framing of these monologues seemed to be a writing or support group, and I'm not sure the play needs it. The four extremely talented actor/storytellers got diluted by their focus moving between the audience and each other. Their energy and support towards one another almost made the audience feel too comfortable. If these are struggles with ide... full review

JESUS RIDE

Schlitt creates a festive environment from moment one, assuring everyone that we're all welcome and here for a good story. From the bobble heads to the well-integrated montages, he captivates an audience of varying beliefs into his own version of the Jesus Ride. As someone obsessed with both Jesus and how media influences culture, Schlitt may as well have written this show just for me. With astonishingly good pacing, multiple stories layered into one another and just the right balance of swee... full review

The Miss Julie Dream Project

The first few scenes dramatized what runs through my head, should I ever consider directing Miss Julie. I unfortunately lost The Dream Play thread, having not read it in twenty years, and that made it hard to follow the last half. All the performances were pretty stellar and often surprising. I'm interested to see more from Fell Swoop that isn't so specifically centered around intimate knowledge of two texts.... full review

I saw this purely based on the "Oreo" monologue they presented during the Cabaret. What a surprise! Some parts were better than others, mostly based on sound levels, but they had me in tears with one character's journey near the beginning. This troupe is one I want to keep on my radar for their brutal inner workings and bravery of theme. It certainly didn't touch everyone as deeply as me, but everyone should know this is how society and our actions/ marketing affects people's mental/physical he... full review

Cocktales

I caught it on a night when some of the troupe missed the show. Many in the ensemble had a strong basis for improv and interesting characters off the bat , but repeated things we'd already covered without ever really bringing more to the story. Zullo has chops above most in the cast, and seemed to be the only one who integrated the audience suggestions at the beginning. ... full review

It's Important to Leave, as well (Feed Your Fringe)

This was simply delicious. I have no idea if it translates beyond the theatre community or anyone whose trade lies in the art of pretending, but I loved it. The script stayed one step ajead and I just enjoyed the ride. Morrison, Marden and their tip top, dedicated ensemble created an Our Town for theatre geeks.... full review

STRANDED

It started strongly. I went purely on a referral and so did not read too much about the show beforehand. Considering the source material and how deeply they all understood how long term abuse could affect people, the script lacked subtlety. Internal conflict doesn't always translate well when dramatized. ... full review
