Lady Into Fox

This is Fringe at its best. An intimate, metatheatrical, intelligently directed, honestly performed piece that attempts to engage the audience at every turn. All three performers connect with the audience, never an easy feat in the round, but Claire Kaplan gives a vivaciously vixen performance that should be noted for an HFF award. "Lady into Fox" takes its audience on a disarming journey of love, animality, and identity, and while the dramaturgy needs some attention, the care with which this pie... full review

Catherine: Jane Austen's Northanger Abbey in Today's L.A.

Let's be honest, updating Jane Austen to LA is daunting. The woman hated Bath because it was an urban hell hole. Bath! With its Georgian architecture and concerted development laws to keep it Georgian! Nevertheless, Stina Peterson is on to something and if her desire is true - to inspire audiences to read Austen's original novel - than she hits the mark. This is a strong showing of physical theatre for the HFF, and not just because the men are doing flips across boxes over a concrete floor. All four performers know that to entertain a live audience means to be available to all the physical impulses happening in the moment. There are wonderful asides, cartoon-esque routines, restoration comedy soliloquies, and a drive towards something we as an audience aren't quite able to grasp. This will come over time. Give the performers a few more nights (an... full review

Revolutionary Love

Revolutionary Love is an act of love by a committed creative team. Intimate, tender, with moments of passionate potential the show is performed by two actors truly serving the supertask or reason for the play's existence. A simple staging and design allows for the man and his poetry to be center stage. Unfortunately I knew nothing about Nazim Hikmet and felt like I knew little more after seeing the show. This is not always necessary - I'm not advocating for biopic theatre - but it felt very much ... full review

A smartly directed fast moving classic romp. Played from a commedia dell'arte influenced style, the actors are all very enjoyable.... full review
