The Transpiring

carol m. becker · June 27, 2024 certified reviewer
I love coming into a show, not knowing any of the creative forces behind it or what the show is about, and being genuinely INSPIRED by the messaging, humor, and fringe appeal! The Transpiring is not short on infectious lyrics presented in a hip-hop style! It's rather AWESOME watching these characters go all-out in storytelling! Some moments are so genuine (between newfound siblings), some are pure warmth (between coworkers/dear friends), and some are awkward turn loving (between parent and chi... full review

Where Within

Walking into the Zephyr theatre, you are immediately transported into a gorgeous forest realm! With beautiful sound effects aplenty, the setting welcomes the audience to go on this ambitious musical journey of two siblings that were emotionally (and physically) lost and how they were able to find each other again. The messaging was heartfelt, albeit, a little confusing sometimes as the music overshadowed some of the singing voices. ... full review

Roost

Roost is a zany dark comedic play within a play that showcases a most formidable real-life Mother/Daughter duo! The writing was fresh, contemporary, at times hysterically funny and other times, tear inducing. And the acting... oh, the acting by both women was razor sharp, edgy, and dramatic in the best ways!! What would it be like to have a conversation with a character you write and get honest feedback? Perhaps it's just as honest as a chat with a parent!... full review

The Fat Girl's Guide to Life, Sex, and Everything in Between

carol m. becker · June 22, 2024 certified reviewer
A beautiful, insightful, empowering solo show that combines the power of a TED Talk with the brutal honesty of growing up and living in a plus-sized body. From the get-go, Ariella lets the audience know for whom this show was created and let's just say, I was one of many plus-sized people in the audience who heard the messaging loud and clear! Universal themes about acceptance, love, and SEX make this piece nothing shy of the most delicious lemonade you'll be drinking on these hot summer days!!... full review

The Rabbit Queen

Fun, period-piece musical based on a true story with a talented cast having one large ROMP on stage?!?! Sign me up, please! I knew no one involved with The Rabbit Queen and certainly enjoyed my evening while going on this WEIRD (let's be honest) journey of not-all-together-shiny protagonist, Mary Toft. It's just not every day you see a woman birthin' rabbits and getting away with it! The idea of the town getting all their information about life's events from FACEBOARD equalled pure GENIUS and ... full review

Our American Tragedy

Walking into the McCadden's space last night, I could tell I was going to be in for a treat! When writers with a passion for history and storytelling meet up with a group of dynamic, dramatic actors PLUS a most formidable director with a knack for staging, get ready for a most impactful fringe show!! The stage was beautifully decorated, the costumes were spot on, the lighting was hypnotic and the sounds were impactful and perfect! If you are looking for a show that is purely inventive, makes y... full review

Gaslighting is My Love Language

carol m. becker · June 19, 2024 uncertified reviewer
This was a rapid-fire, naughty, raunch-heavy comedy act that didn't shy aware from all the details of a marriage gone wrong, a parental marriage that should have ended, a less-than-joyous look at motherhood, and a career still waiting to happen! And to think, I would have missed it all if I hadn't walked across the street after a previous show to discover the Hudson telling me there were tickets available for this show, which, in my opinion, has to win BEST SOLO SHOW TITLE!! Overall, I enjoyed ... full review

The Iditarod

carol m. becker · June 19, 2024 certified reviewer
Sometimes, a show just HAS ME! I came into The Iditarod not knowing the performer or her previous work, but I left an ENORMOUS FAN! The facts don't lie - sometimes, a performer is just so AHHHMAZING, her energy so INFECTIOUS, her storytelling so REVELATORY, and her way to interact with the audience so BRILLIANT, you can't help but fall under her spell!! And I was completely under Teresa Tottle's (portrayed by actress/writer Maria Gnoza) spell as she held a little party, had deep conversations ... full review

1972

carol m. becker · June 18, 2024 certified reviewer
There is something to be said about intimate theatrical productions pushing the boundaries of drama, movement, music, song, and creation!! This piece made me remember my experimental theatre roots in the BEST WAYS possible because I could sense how this devised piece was a joy to manifest!! I came to 1972 having already had a delicious taste of the work that John Wuchte's ensembles are capable of sharing and this one did not disappoint! While it labels itself a "workshop" or "work-in-progress"... full review

A Bella Incarceration

carol m. becker · June 16, 2024 certified reviewer
Serio-comedic, Clowning, Literary Heroes, Deeply Moving, Cerebral and Riveting are the first few words that come to my mind when reflecting on the solo show presented by Ann Noble and her alter ego, Bella Ventricle!! A prison, whether self-inflicted or otherwise, wreaks havoc on the psyche and fighting the good fight (aka, saving a tree here and there), dishes out a price to be paid once the damage is assessed. Poor Bella just wants out and has to figure out the best way to earn her freedom. ... full review
