Rock 'n' Roll Heretic

This play is like the flip side of the Elvis story, a performer buoyed by the same spirituals and plagued by similar corruption. Unlike Elvis, Rory is a survivor who comes to terms with her demons. She faces some hard choices, and we imagine her as an artist who will continue to grow and flourish for decades to come. Her story is brought to life by a talented ensemble cast.... full review

THE TANNER

Alex McSherry is a powerhouse who brings history brilliantly to life in The Tanner. This show is a must-see for fans of William Wallace, Scottish history, or compelling theatre. As he weaves his tale, we learn about the ancient art of tanning and the brutal machinations of medieval combat through the eyes of a 13th century peasant.... full review

Looking for love in the internet age is something we can all relate to, and Alena Bernardi as Polly hits the high notes and the low notes of this journey, both vocally and thematically. Her classically trained voice sounds Broadway bound, and her boundless enthusiasm is inspirational.... full review

Peerada Meemalayath has expanded what was originally a one-woman show into a theater piece with 6 actors, three men and three women, on the topic of human trafficking. Through movement and dialogue in Thai, Spanish, and English, she suggests the international scope of this problem by following the plight of two young girls who have been kidnapped for use as prostitutes. They are watched over by their jailer, Auntie Em, quite different from her namesake in the Wizard of Oz. The story of one gir... full review

Pervert

Since June is Gay Pride month, this play took me completely by surprise. I expected it to be pretty kinky, but in terms of the perversion of justice, it hit the political nail right on the head. It brought to mind the recent Senate race in Alabama, where Republican Roy Moore lost to a Democrat due in part to his dalliances with underaged girls. It also brought to mind Ted Kennedy's tragic auto accident at Chappaquiddick in 1969, which many play goers may be too young to remember. The acting wa... full review

Talking with Angels: Budapest, 1943

It is heartening in these unquiet times to be reminded that every one of us can take a stand for good. The main character of this play, Gita Mallasz, was honored in 2011 as one of the Righteous Among the Nations for her Schindler-like rescue of over 100 Jewish women and children. She also participated in a small group who claimed to have received angelic instruction during the war, and this play tells their story. There's a saying that we have an army of angels at our command if we but ask, and t... full review

This play is a modern masterpiece, and this production of it is a sheer delight. The acting is magnificent and the play touches on so many facets of modern life: friendship, loyalty, family, human frailty, and above all, love. How do we love one another despite our weaknesses? What's the nature of forgiveness? What's the truth and what's bullshit, and how do you tell the difference, in other people and in yourself? You owe it to yourself to see this performance. Don't miss it! It will make you ... full review

Herpes: A Love Story

This is a show not to be missed. It's funny, brave, heartfelt, and a perfect showcase for the enormous talent that resides in its star and playwright, Cherise Pascual. I hope the 2017 Hollywood Fringe is only the beginning of its life on the stage. It's about time herpes came out of the closet, because it's here to stay. Thanks to Cherise for shining a light on this topic and reminding us that it's not what happens to us that's important, but how we respond to it. ... full review

SNATCHED...Stories From Down There

This show was honest, humorous, heartfelt, and revelatory. Nobody ever said that love, whether gay or straight, was going to be pretty. Sometimes it can be pretty awful. But, as Loree shows us by example, it's a journey worth taking. Even if it seems on occasion you're being dragged around by the short hairs. ... full review

Please Stand Clear, The Doors Are Closing

This show is a must see, particularly for anyone interested in doing a one person show, to see how good it can get. David Harper is an amazingly talented writer and performer. I spent 20 years in Texas, and his Southern characters are right on the money. In the space of little over an hour, he portrays several different ethnicities in 12 separate monologues. These portrayals are humorous and touching, sometimes poignant, always believable. As a former philosophy graduate who has never yet been pa... full review
