This show felt like being inside someone's dream. From the moment Paris takes the stage tap dancing we can sense that while the air is cheery for now, something darker lurks in the wings ready to reveal itself. Slowly through various dances and carefully chosen narration, Paris reveals bits of story that are wonderfully specific, yet don't linger too long to overwhelm the flow. Trench was incredibly funny and well-acted. I wasn't sure what to expect other than a one woman show. What I got was a thoroughly entertaining, playful, and surprising experience. Watching Ann Loud switch between five very distinct characters and turn her performance on a dime was a big part of the fun. What a fun ride! The turn at the beginning was a great hook, although I do feel as though the play did lose some of the childish innocence which makes this SUCH a hilarious satire around ACT 2. It got a little House of Cards-y minus all the sexy stuff, although plenty was implied. Especially about hands stuff. The discussion of social issues in an entertaining way is so so important, it helps bridge the gap of talking about the hard stuff in a way that doesn't leave us feeling emotionally exhausted.
