McSherry is a master storyteller, electrifying and mesmerizing. The tanner is crude, brutal, and defiant, bloodied, but unbowed; at times a twinkle in his eye, at times a tear. When the lights came up, I was surprised not to be barefoot and wearing a burlap tunic, so firmly had I been transported to the 13th century.
What I didn't like
It just doesn’t get any better than this.
My overall impression
Alex McSherry is a powerhouse who brings history brilliantly to life in The Tanner. This show is a must-see for fans of William Wallace, Scottish history, or compelling theatre. As he weaves his tale, we learn about the ancient art of tanning and the brutal machinations of medieval combat through the eyes of a 13th century peasant.
