What I liked

The book is cute and tight, the story simple but engaging, the dialogue witty, and some of the lyrics with humorous rim shots at the end of a phrase made me laugh aloud— (Persons/people rhyme lines). Another great moment was the head of the thieves apologizing for his band of thugs at the end of the song.

The actors are all very likable and not a mediocre voice in the bunch. They work perfectly as an ensemble.

Staging like the horse jumps worked wonderfully and was fun and imaginative.

Another huge win in this production is the flawless streaming. Shapiro could teach theatre companies around the country how to do a professional and accessible stream. Kudos for that—especially important as we learn to navigate the new normal of theatre.

What I didn't like

The one thing I would change in this (and the Bully Problem) is the notion of the hit song that is melodic enough with a catchy enough hook that people can’t forget it. I saw another musical at Fringe that, unlike this, had a multitude of other issues, but what it did have was a catchy hit song that I could not get out of my head. I believe if Shapiro gives us a few hits that we can’t forget any show he writes will go very far.

My overall impression

All in all, a very fun, high energy, tight and well-executed afternoon of family theatre. As always, Shapiro produces an up-beat, well-cast, energetic show that has the benefit of excellent singing voices, tight ensemble acting, and creative and imaginative staging. I think it has earned its Fringe accolades and Shapiro is not only an extremely talented artist, but a kind, supportive and professional part of our community. I wish him every possible success.
