What I liked

The staging, lighting, the direction, the seamless transitions, the use of negro spirituals and authentic African garments for the costuming were all beautifully blended in the narrative. As an audience member, I loved how interactive this performance was and how well she connected with all of us. You felt as if you were on this emotional journey with her moment to moment, watching her every move and hanging on her every word.

What I didn't like

Incredible as is.

My overall impression

Exquisite. I was captivated by Hammond’s honest and vulnerable performance. Her character work, development and use of dialect was impeccable. I loved the way that Hammond brings this narrative to live from different perspective. She gives us a history lesson on African culture that we did not know we needed but so glad we received. As a fellow artist and person of color, I was proud to see a story about our culture represented on the stage in its truest form. Makena was masterful, a truly talented storyteller. One of the BEST one woman shows I have seen thus far. A MUST-SEE show that I would highly recommend that everyone goes to experience. You will be taken on an emotional journey from start to finish. Be ready for your heart and minds will be changed forever.
