I was absolutely blown away by this show. Makena perfectly mixes humor and heartbreak together to create an outstanding performance. I had no idea Margaret Garner's story before Makena so beautifully portrayed her. This story needs to be told today. It was breathtaking. ...

A powerful, devastating short work about grief and black motherhood. Really left me thinking about what we do to protect our children and why, and what happens when the systems around us give us no other options. ...

Black woman in deep water is the rare case when a theatrical performance is so precise and aesthetically perfect that it seems like watching a movie.
The staging, the music and Makena were incredibly mesmerizing.
I loved it...

Makena is a powerful actor. I was inspired. From start to finish I was mesmerized by this character on stage and her riveting story. It was the type of theatre that made me think, "Wow, art is amazing. Actors are amazing. Story-telling is beautiful. This is beautiful art." And as an actor myself, it's always the best experience when I'm inspired by an artist's work. This was that kind of experience. Short but very sweet. Definitely recommend it!...

Well written play, taking me from sad to hopeful. It was a reminder of how far we've come and how much further we have to go. Makena was superb as an elegant ancestor, and just as superb as the sad Margaret who experienced such a difficult choice that pushed her from extreme sadness to madness. Overall left we being thoughtful about my role in making a better future for my children.
