Four Clowns deftly lives up to their moniker with this doozy of a number. Director Joe DeSoto and this super talented cast have devised an uproarious hour of comedy and melodrama that packs a lot of punches and will keep you rolling in the aisle hours after the proverbial curtain has dropped. During the performance I attended a couple of wonky technical elements and some lively audience members created opportunities for ad-lib that were very skillfully utilised. And, since much of the show is improvised beyond the devised structure, the show is definitely worth a second viewing (already bought my ticket!). They’ve rightfully earned a 2 show extension, so go find a seat for this one!
What I didn't like
There were a couple of slow moments onstage where it felt that some more could have been packed in, but these were few and far (as far as an hour of theatre will get you anyway) between. There was also some staging that had performers standing in the dark downstage where they were likely difficult to see from some of the upper row, despite there being ample well lit room upstage for these moments.
My overall impression
A delightful example of clowning and physical comedy with just the right amount of audience participation and a sprinkle of melodrama. If you’re looking for an hour of nonstop laughter, you’ve come to the right place, pardner.
