What I liked
The nonstop hyper-educated banter would normally drive me insane, but I bought what THE LAST CROISSANT was selling about five minutes it, thanks in large part to the performances. Standouts include a ‘swinging for the fences’ (and hitting several out of the park) Conor Murphy as the annoyingly likable Ranger Dave; and Meg Cashel and Tyler Bremer as the insanely in-sync Mumbo and Jumbo. The set is one of the best I’ve seen for a Fringe show – elaborate and creative and likely attributing to just how comfortable this case seems on stage. They are given a virtual playground in which to perform. Also, the pre-show serenade outside the theatre was delightful.
What I didn't like
All of the aspects of the show I loved were, unfortunately, covering some of the weaknesses with the script, which occasionally trades moments of real depth and humanity for absurdist laughs. If that were balanced a little better, who knows how far this show could have gone.
My overall impression
An energetic and colorful group of performers successfully balance the absurd heights of the comedy with the more tender moments of humans just trying to belong. And the set is truly a piece of stagecraft to behold.
