CONSTANCE JAQUAY STRICKLAND certified reviewer June 27, 2019
Marty writes as well as directs , Fight or Flight, a bold play showcasing a young girl full of grit. It’s not an obvious play but it is a play of the times. We discover Zoey Jones, a young female fighter, looking for a gym to train at. Through Zoey whose about to have her first professional boxing fight, we discover an interesting look at female fighters finding support in/out of the ring, how much it takes mentally to fight with your fists in a ring, and how we build bonds and friendships with coaches. It is a unique new work full of heart! ... full review

Fight or Flight was a great journey through the relationship between yourself and your own will to power through the agonizing struggles of existence. At what point do you reach your peak existence? What are the powers that compel you to keep moving forward and striving for excellence? How do you keep that drive alive? The playwright examined these ideas in a fun and thought provoking way utilizing sport to tell her story. The character of Jones and Easton display both sides of the spectrum of the believer and the one needing something to believe in. The two actors earn the audience attention from their first moments on stage with a jump rope as they proceed to jump through the hoops of human connection to begin to understand their personal ... full review

Fight or Flight is a charming play about perseverance with lots and lots of heart. I was very impressed by this small cast of 4. From the retired too soon boxing phenom, his straight to the point manager, to the female boxing student who comes in to win our hearts, to the sports announcer/narrator who weaves this story together, everyone did an absolutely lovely job. I was intrigued and wanted to know more as the play continued, and that's what you want to see when you see theatre! It's also really bold/impressive that these theatre peeps literally just hopped in a car, drove half the country to participate in the HFF19, and crushed it. If you want to see a well rounded show with heart in under 60 minutes this is your show! ... full review
