From the moment I picked up the program riddled with typos and jabs at those who feel they want to be the orchestra, audience, and conductor- I WAS IN and knew Matt was going to bring the motha-f*ckin noise.
The launch - this man knows how to do it. You understand what kind of show this will be almost instantly. There is no warming up or wasted time, from Richey's first breath we know he is lampooning the one-man show, the ego-maniacal actor, the self aggrandizing artist, other fringers, and general a-holes we meet in Los Angeles.
Richey puts a mirror up to all of us- forcing us to ask: why are we doing this? What is the actual reason we are creating a play? Do we all really have something to say? Should I have been a dentist or a low...

Blackboxing is both a side-splitting takedown of Fringe and one man shows, and the fulfillment of every stage manager's worst nightmare (and fondest dreams). I left in actual pain from laughing so much and so hard over 45 minutes. You'll want to sing along to a song you've never even heard before. Jim and Matt both deliver brilliance in moment after moment, as well as some unexpected heart....

Oh, what a tasty skewering of Fringe and solo shows we have here. Blackboxing is absurd but at the same time so painfully true that anyone familiar with the subject matter will be delighted....

This is just beautiful work on so many levels. It's hilarious and cutting and will send any theatre student all the way back to their first day in college where we were all, essentially, Travis. It both honors and 'sees' the stage manager [can I get a 'hell yes!'], takes solid aim at the very festival it is featured in and surprises you with its capacity to plumb emotional depths. If you are feeling rundown, on the edge or alone in this theatrical landscape, you should see this show. I promise you, it will make it all better....

"blackboxing" is not just a one-person show; it's an eclectic theatrical experience that defies conventional boundaries. Winner of multiple prestigious awards including Best Cabaret/Variety, the Standout Song Award, TPP’s Trope Buster, and more, this production is a testament to the creative genius of Matt Ritchey and his team. It's no wonder "blackboxing" has been showered with accolades and nominations, including a Fringe First and Outdoor Voices’ “Conversation Creation.”
The play follows Travis, who believes he is ready for his one-man show. The truth, however, is far more complicated and delightfully chaotic. Ritchey has crafted a metatheatrical masterpiece that is self-aware, humorous, and surprisingly touching. "blackboxing" transce...
