What I liked

Joy has all the makings of a superstar. I say that with no hyperbole – as charming as she is talented. I believe this musical has legs. Add 45 minutes, and this is a Broadway show. Perfectly in tune with the new age mainstream musical, but more advanced. Hilarious and PERSONAL, which is what I liked the most. Real, honest insight into a world masterly portrayed in writing by a supreme talent. The music was excellent, the lyrics even better. This is the show I will rememeber the most from the festival. The ensemble was brilliant and the way they used the bare bones production to their comic advantage was brilliant directing. This is a special show that surprises and challenges us. Do not miss this one!!!

What I didn't like

Shows like this are where the stigma of Fringe show length just makes me sad. I know there are a lot of shows, but this is the kind of show that is prime for the big time. But for big time theaters to produce it, it needs more time to shine. Expand on the conflict with the Asian parents, flesh out act 2A with the white parents, take time with the well-earned resolution, and get this to 90mins at least. This is a mainstage musical, more deserving than any I’ve seen at Fringe in ten years of attending. It will make a brilliant full length.

My overall impression

Brilliant, personal, extremely well executed. Joy is a force.
