What I liked
Written by Daniel Botello (who also delivers an arresting performance), The First and The Last is a tightly constructed work. Botello’s script contemplates some hard questions, but does so with wit, poetry, and a fair share of heart. Botello is also masterful at building tension; the conflict between characters simmers and crackles until it reaches a fever pitch, again and again. It’s a wild and satisfying ride.
Ani Marderosian’s direction takes the script to another level. The staging is exciting, dynamic, and effectively utilizes the space. Of particular note is her use of the ensemble: she introduces choreographed movement to sections that might otherwise feel stagnant. The effect is spellbinding.
Come for the script and direction, stay for the performers. I can’t overstate the level of skill and professionalism this cast brings to the table. Donald Russell is grounded, but electric. Brendan Kane is a firecracker. Andres Dominguez is dangerous as he is devious. Brian Brennan is charming and layered. Daniel Botello is pitch perfect. Elena Murray is seductive, yet vulnerable. Alexa Vellanoweth is simply delightful. And finally, Cheryl Ann brings the heart.
To put it plainly, it’s a beautiful show. See it.
