Well done, lots of specific characters all fully realized by the solo actor. Funny and poignant, brought me back to my days living in NYC. Definitely worth seeing....

This is a funny, solo tour de force black comedy of all the obnoxious people Dan was endlessly pouring drinks for, including a journey through the hellish inspection process. His burned out persona and almost grotesque impersonations made this show darkly satisfying. ...

I loved the characters, the music, the lighting cues. Everything was on point to make Dan Ruth's characters come to life. Hilarious show. Dark. Revealing. ...

Wow! Tour de force! Dan’s portrayal of his collection of characters is just jaw dropping. He slides in and out of personalities with flawless effort and equal parts enthusiasm. His timing is impeccable and his delivery as colorful as there are emotions in the world. This well runs deep!...

Performed by master storyteller Dan Ruth, this show is funny, sad, inspirational, depressing and so many other things.
This is a man who’s been around the streets and alleys of New York nightlife and he has absorbed the details and idiosyncrasies of the people he has mingled with there. Weaving stories together that span a long series of jobs and multiple years working (and drinking) in all types of bars in a city that has all types of bars, Ruth reveals a fascinating life that holds surprising moments of highs and lows. It is compelling to hear about what he has witnessed as confidant and server.

A Life Behind Bars is a tour de force written and performed by Dan Ruth about his life as a actor/bartender living in Brooklyn, dealing with the changing landscape of NYC in the 90's through the horrors of 9/11 and Dan's personal journey with alcohol and getting sober. He brilliantly portrays many different characters, morphing in and out of them, weaving them into his life story seamlessly. I was taken on a ride with Dan that left me exhausted and exhilarated at the same time. It(HE) is brave, honest and powerful and it literally took my breath away. There is one more performance and I must say RUN, DON'T WALK, to go see this show Sunday at 12:00 noon at The Lounge Theatre!...

I am so grateful that Dan came to do his show in Los Angeles and that I could witness a genius of comedy, a master of characters, a skilled story teller. WOW!!!! I've been telling everyone to go see his show in which Dan is several different people, so accurately, in a hilarious way. He switches from one person to the other effortlessly. Through out the show Dan gives everything, he is fully committed and I couldn't take my eyes off of him!! And the show's ending keeps you, reflecting, respectful, uplifted... It's a fabulous ride. Congratulations!! I can't wait to see Dan take over the stage again!! ...
