Lisa K Wyatt is expressive, surprising and endlessly watchable as spinster-turned-witch Laura Willowes, whose put-upon, worried-looking vulnerability (peppered with slyly witty observations about her annoying family) gives way to an almost carnal desire for solitude (and the dark embrace of Satan).
The script, adapted by Sal Niccolazo and director Kate Motzenbacker, is full of rich descriptive language, dry comedy and subtle social commentary. The direction by Motzenbacker is elegant, often playful, letting Wyatt's performance shine. Oh my, what a delightful little show! In a gentle, patient monologue, the show builds a complete picture of a woman who has made the best of circumstances in which she was thrown, despite the fact that it was contrary to her own dreams and desires. When she finally (spoiler!) finds a way to carve out for herself the life she always wanted, we are thrilled and tickled for her. ...
