The Milford Project

Milford is hilarious, and a great time at the theatre. The music is outstanding and I was humming a couple of the songs to myself the next day. It's a clever mix of self-aware musical-theatre jokes (in the vein of Title of Show) and satiric social commentary (a la Urinetown). At 90 minutes it's the perfect length- it feels like an evening's entertainment but doesn't overstay its welcome. Go! ... full review

By far, my favorite part of this musical was the exceptional wit with which it was written. It has a keen sense of self-examination, poking fun at both musicals as a genre and the scientific culture that is the setting for Milford's story. Good acting from the entire ensemble, good orchestration and lyrics. I can only hope this continues to be developed and massaged into a larger budget production. Incredibly fun with bright bouncy witty songs. I won't bore you with a synopsis since I'll assume you can look up. Let me ask you though. Do yo like fun? Do you like to laugh? Good then go see the show. Reminiscent of the Putnam county spelling bee, and Dr. Strangelove this wacky tale does a lot of things I hate about modern musicals. In particular it has a great deal of self aware camp. However, it is executed so well I found myself actually enjoying myself. That is not to say the production doesn't have problems. Even thought the orchestra consists only of a piano and drums, the actors were occasionally drowned out by the music. This was the first show I saw for the 2011 Fringe, and I'd say the festival is off to a good start! Lots of fun, funny moments and several very catchy tunes. Like others, I had trouble picking out a lot of the words. It seemed like some of the actors were singing outside of their optimum ranges. But the story was quite witty and the pacing was snappy. I enjoyed a lot of the choreography and physical comedy. Glad to see the Fringe committing to fun new shows like this one.... full review

A Review of "Thw Milford Project" As a long time participant and observer of the Fringe Festival of New York City, I was not surprised when the premiere of this play was packed with audience connected to the show as girlfriends/boyfriends, family members, neighbors of the cast and producers who hooted, laughed, cheered and otherwise thoroughly enjoyed the performance. Unfortunately, I was not so encumbered and prejudiced to extol the virtues of the show that was my first experience of the LA version of the Fringe Festival. I laughed. A lot. It felt great. Beyond the laughs, though, what most impressed me about The Milford Project was how tight and plausible the plot was. Normally in a musical you expect the plot will be a sort of after-thought. Not so in The Milford Project. In fact it seemed to me that great pain was taken to make the story flow seamlessly from scene to scene in a methodical and logical way. I really appreciated that. ... full review

The Milford Project a lot of fun and a wonderful play! The music is catchy (I was singing some of the songs the next day), the performances are great (especially the young male lead), and the issues relevant and done in a smart, comedic way. Great direction, laugh out loud funny.... full review
