5 Sirens: Beware of Rocks

Seeing 5 Sirens: Beware of Rocks was a great way to spend a Saturday afternoon. Be it comedy or drama these five, talented women have each written ten-minute plays about communication (or miscommunication) that offers enough variety for everyone to find something to connect to. Spock at Bat by Kiera Nowacki definitely hit home for me because I’m a baseball freak myself and have watched many a game with people who don’t know it at all. Watching all of these plays either brought a smile to my face and sent me out chuckling, or moved me so much that three days later I’m still thinking about them. All I can do is thank these five playwrights for writing fresh shows and giving me an enjoyable ride. ... full review

I loved the fresh voices in these 5 one acts - about how we connect to each other - and the rest of the universe. "Spock At Bat" is a great gender-twist on a budding romance with nice nuanced performances; "Whatever Works" explores power & sex & power; if you've ever been late because you were stuck on the 405, "Don't Panic" is something we all relate to living in LA; "Ten Years Left" beautifully explores a mother's debilitating illness; and "Out of Here" is a heartfelt comedic look about other worldly connections. For me this is what the Fringe is all about - encouraging fresh voices in theater and supporting their visions.... full review

I went to the opening performance on Saturday of "5 Sirens: Beware of Rocks" and was thoroughly impressed with the plays these ladies wrote. I felt a strong connection to some aspects of a couple of the plays, which made them even more enjoyable. Some giggles, a couple bursts of laughter, and quite a few "Yes!" realizations hit me while watching. Especially Sarah Dzida's play entitled "Don't Panic" because I have definitely 'been there, done that' and the emotions expressed by the actors were spot on! ... full review

In one hour, 5 SIRENS takes you through a panoply of genres - from realism, to montage, to science fiction, with a tweak of 50 Shades, and some madness on the 405 in between. One of the delights of the Fringe is experiencing the range of stories that performance makers want to tell. And here we have five very distinct female voices share their particular obsessions, preoccupations and imaginations. Some thoughtful performances from a troop of versatile actors. And a real sense of the generosity of spirit surrounding this particular collaborative and the LA FEMALE PLAYWRIGHTS INITIATIVE at large. ... full review

Excellent lighting and sound design, some great performances, and of course wonderful writing on display from the five playwrights who work is featured. The pieces are so different that everyone is guaranteed to find something they love. I was pleasantly surprised that my favorite wound up being one I would not have expected based on the description. And I enjoyed that most of them were capable of mixing in some heartfelt, deep emotions along with humor (or vice versa).... full review

Five for the price of one! As someone who has dealt with life-altering illness my favorite was probably Autumn McAlpin's raw portrayal of a woman facing down certain losses. I also loved the others--from aliens to sex therapy to baseball--all packed in an hour. An easy one to recommend!... full review

The plays are five different takes on human relations. Some are funny, one is very sad and meaningful, and one is silly yet enlightening. Definitely worth seeing!... full review
