“I described the performance in 1996 as “a testament to the capacities of storytelling,” and I stand behind that, still.” – Steven Leigh Morris, Stage Raw
“Mitchell does a superb job evoking the denizens of the Tenderloin and of the tiny provincial city in which he now lives.” – Tony Frankel, Stage and Cinema
“Mr. Mitchell has mounted his showcase piece again for the 2014 L.A. Fringe Festival, but we can hope he’ll get it produced after its five-performance run is over. It’s that good – no, that amazing a piece of theatrical derring-do that you’ll not forget any time soon.” – Dale Reynolds, Stagehappenings
WHO IS LINDENARDEN?
Inspired by the Van Morrison song of the same name, “Linden Arden Stole the Highlights” is the story of Linden Arden, self-proclaimed Scottish-American refugee from the American Drug Wars of the 1980’s, a man searching for a home in the bucolic locale of Arklow, Scotland, while pursued by the mob he betrayed in San Francisco.
It’s a poetically savage tale of faith, survival and redemption, written and performed by Colin Mitchell (“Breaking and Entering”, “Mission to Mate”), directed by Christian Levatino (“Sunny Afternoon”) and produced by Rose Desena, an electrifying hour of theater that Steven Leigh Morris of the LA Weekly deemed “A testament to the capacities of storytelling” in its first Los Angeles incarnation back in 1996.
The other critics agreed:
“A wonderfully savage morality tale.” – LA Times
“If ever there was a new piece of theater that was sultry, stylish and stinging, Colin Mitchell’s one-man masterpiece is it.” – Backstage
“Electrifying and heartbreaking.” – LA Dramalogue
“His storytelling abilities can bring back the genre.” – West Hollywood Weekly
“Colin Mitchell took the opaque lyrics of “Linden Arden Stole the Highlights” and created a translucent character who was simultaneously unbelievable and full of humanity." – LA Times
“A witty biting tale of murder, lost faith and survival, utterly moving.” – SF Bay Guardian
“Raw energy, nerve ends exposed.” – SF Dramalogue
“The story’s savage beauty lingers long after the stage lights have faded.” – LA Weekly
First bowing in the tiny loft of a Scottish Pub in San Francisco in 1994, revived two years later in West Hollywood in 1996 and then again in 1998 in North Hollywood, this critically-acclaimed award-winning one man play returns for a limited engagement at the 2014 Hollywood Fringe Festival and now as a part of the Encore Producers Award for TWOMORESHOWSONLY.
