Joke Hold

As someone who's been in the improv world for almost 2 decades, this whole show felt real. It's exploration on how one bad apple can ruin the experience of the bunch, had my nervous system on edge. I could still laugh because of the commitments to the bits, character work, and lovability of the actors. While the build up to the climax is intense. Joke Hold does a great job capturing the intimacy and connections of being on a creative team, good and bad.... full review

A congenial sketch comedy group headed to an important, out-of-state competition has pulled in a new member to replace one recently departed. Did they unknowingly bring a serpent into their own small garden? Or is it each member's personal problems that really begins to crack their comradely façade? JOKE HOLD's talented ensemble deftly portrays the group's growing uneasiness and, simultaneously, their inability to put their finger on the problem of what seems to be tripping them up. Is newest member Griffin (a layered performance by Armand Vasquez) just asking questions that need to be asked, or does he have more nefarious agenda? Loved this show! It has been a while since I have seen live theatre and so happy I did! Joke Hold really took me for a ride and I was hanging on for every last bit. The cast was so talented, witty and passionate. Such strong characters, hilarious, fun, quick dialogue with a giant twist at the end! A laser-sharp script, great ensemble cast and smart direction! Anyone involved with the theatre will recognize the all-too familiar backstage politics and shenanigans. Paul Frellick's play turns up the heat with an unsettling dark comedy. Under the direction of William Charlton, we watch a cast of six comedy improvisers preparing for their big show - one of whom slowly begins to undermine their efforts. The laughs quickly turn to gasps in a play that turns the "Yes And" on its head.... full review
