About the Project

Rise of a King isn’t just Vico’s crown – it’s ours, too. It’s a mirror held up to anyone who has ever questioned their place in the world, reminding them that their truth is worthy, their joy is sacred, and their story matters.” -Big Gay Energy Podcast

Vico Ortiz—aka “Jim Jimenez” from Max’s cult-hit Our Flag Means Death—presents the West Coast Premiere of their first solo show, RISE OF A KING. A cosmic, gender-bending joyride, this burlesque extravaGAYnza blends drag, astrology, and raw storytelling to untangle the mess and magic of growing up—while rewriting the rules of who gets to wear the crown.

Heartfelt, hilarious, and just the right amount of woo-woo, RISE OF A KING is directed by Ismanuel Rodríguez, written by Vico Ortiz, and developed with Nikki Levy.

Produced by Celebration Theatre, in association with BoriQueer Productions and Tantai Teatro, with set design by Josue Matias and puppets by Fyre.

Celebration Theatre is Southern California’s longest-running queer and allied theatre. Since 1982, we entertain, inspire, and empower with innovative productions that celebrate the LGBTQIA+ community.
