This is America. Black & Blue & Beautiful & Betraying & Bold & Jamar & Kayla & so many others who have lived this that we may never hear from. This is America and it is being reborn thanks to those like Jamar. This was one of the most meaningful, personal, creative and powerful plays I have ever seen. The expression of a man, a boy, a human's throttled struggle with being black, being human, being alive, all moved me closer to my heart in the most profound ways. What makes this piece so exceptional is that it can pull out the humanity in all of us. Just saw something extraordinary. Jamar’s one-man show Black and Blue at the Hollywood Fringe Festival was nothing short of transcendent. In under an hour, he embodied four completely distinct Black characters — each one with a unique voice, story, and soul. The precision, vulnerability, and power he brought to every role was staggering. I laughed. I cried. I held my breath. And I left different than I walked in. This show is astounding and maybe the most important show I've seen yet this Fringe. A beautifully staged series of characters presents nuanced and detailed perspectives of black men of various generations and roles, before Jamar brilliantly pulls together his insights from all of them and appeals to everyone to be *all of themselves*. ... full review

What a powerhouse performance! Jamar is a studied performer and his character work is impeccable. He takes a narrative that many may try to sweep under the rug and breathes new life into it. With crisp structure and seamless transitions, Black and Blue reframes and humanizes what it means to live in the skin of a Black man in the United States. He tackles this from multiple perspectives, each one more surprising than the next. It's a brave, bold look at a fraught situation. When you watch Jamar you are watching a fully formed professional. His craft and attention to detail is meticulous. From the moment he steps on stage you are in confident and capable hands. Jamar commands the stage with ease, as he shifts between 4 distinct characters. His physicality and character work really stand out. When the second character was introduced I was in awe as it seemed like his face had completely changed, a mark of Jamar’s physical artistry and painstaking attention to the complexities of each character. It’s a real treat as an audience member to watch an actor perform and think “this guy has it”, as if you’ve discovered some hidden greatness all to yourself. "Black and Blue" is an unflinching tour de force, birthed from the immensely gifted mind of Jamar Gilbert. The actor, the writer, and the play contain multitudes: "One body. Many truths." Gilbert gives credence to each one--each truth--individually, letting the many arguments breathe and boil off in a kind of socratic seminar of the soul. He's got a lot to say, and damn, does he say it well. Add to that the brilliant staging by Kayla Raelle. With her keen eye for space, the hour-long solo show never loses steam. This show was intentional and most importantly “necessary.” What bought tears to my eyes is the subject matter and seeing someone that looks like me do what I want to do and doing it soo freely! Art has no boundaries but it’s does have connections in which we all can coexist in!! Witnessing a diverse audience share the same air , the same experience within those theater walls, the same silence , the same introspection…was captivating!! I loved Jalen’s ability to shape-shift into the lives of so many people that we know and his ability to not beret us with a worldly agenda but to SHOW US BY LIVING TRUEFULLY THROUGH THOSE BEAUTIFUL CHARACTERS !!!
