Any musical theatre fan knows that it takes more than great music and lyrics to make a show soar. It takes a heroic protagonist, a contemptible antagonist, and a captivating story with an arc that combines all the elements. Look no further as One Up: The Musical delivers the aforementioned plus 15 original songs, creative choreography, and a cast of 9 that rises to the occasion! As a child of the 80's who avidly played Nintendo, Playstation, and even the earlier Atari games, when I heard about One Up: The Musical, I got excited. After seeing the show, I understand the much deserved hype. This show is just delightful, energetic, and FUN! I have no doubt in my mind that this show will win an Encore, but even more than that, I can see th... full review

Utterly charming from start to finish! Musicals at Fringe are extremely hard to do and this team pulls it off with major success. Structurally, the book is close to perfect and I love the themes explored. The crowd was hooting and hollering as characters make pivotal decisions to stand up for themselves in an attempt to break the social norms and establish gender equality within the video game industry - a workplace known for its toxic masculinity. The songs perfectly capture that 80's power anthem vibe with keeping true to its broadway musical style roots. Special shoutout to the actor playing the character Neil, who kept on stealing the show with every line delivery resulting in the crowd rolling from laughter. Kudos to the whole team for ... full review

Such a polished spectacular extravaganza! It is exactly what is promised and more! An 80s musical about women in the video game industry, complete with rockin songs that sound straight from the pop radio in 1980!... full review

One Up is utterly joyful, with a great score, fun musical numbers, and an energetic cast; it’s a fun romp from start to finish. Despite being set in the late 80s during the 8-bit video game era, One Up is surprisingly current in how it depicts the game industry’s poor treatment of its female developers, an issue that still heavily plagues the industry today. It reminds us of the efforts women have made in the past, and provides a hopeful outlook for the future.... full review

If Stranger Things, Hamilton, and your favorite childhood arcade had a baby—it might look a lot like One Up. This 80s-set musical comedy about women game developers breaking into a male-dominated industry doesn’t just press start—it slams the button, eats your tokens, and wins your heart. Yes, it’s hilarious. Yes, the musical numbers slap harder than a Street Fighter combo. “Player 2” was a literal show-stopper (someone in my row gasped), and “11:59” masterfully dialed up the tension… only to defuse it with a well-timed laugh grenade.... full review

This show was so fun! From song one it was just an absolute joy to watch. I was so impressed with how well produced it was. Everything from the songs, cast, choreography, and production – it was really spectacular. It's a feel good piece that's a balm for the soul. And I loved the 80s and video games of it all. A surprising industry to pair with a musical, and yet it works so well. It's upbeat and heartfelt. I hope everyone sees this show!... full review
