Ben’s performance, as honest and charming as ever, as well as Adair Tishler’s Phoebe the Cat which was a blast. The sets were fun and inventive and we all took the ride, smiling the whole way through.
What I didn't like
A full band and another 15-20 minutes could land this musical in the sweet spot, but for a 50 minute Fringe edition it was right on the money.
My overall impression
I didn’t have a clue what to expect walking into this musical, but the charm and heart was evident from the very first note. There is a wonderful dynamic that Ben Boquist’s music brings to the stage that simply delights, and Ben’s Viking Trip is a special addition to this year’s Fringe Fest. Ben is a true musical theatre composer with a distinctive voice and charisma. He knows how to tell a simple and honest story, but with musical complexity, clever harmonies, and endless spirit. You’re always in good hands with this guy at the helm. There are real Jonathan Larson vibes that come to mind when I hear Ben’s music.
