Hal disappears into his father anytime the glasses go on, and he plays other characters too, which come at you rapid-fire, polished of course by his comedic intelligence; and then with a pause and a thoughtful smile, he returns to himself. I expected the bombast and chaos, but it is the poignant and honest appreciation for love, no matter how mangled and upside-down, that balances the show and gives it a huge heart. Another epic triumph, in the Hollywood Fringe tradition, Jersey Devil will absolutely be carried on and enjoyed by many more audiences in the future.
What I didn't like
No mention of my guy Kirby Puckett?? ;)
My overall impression
A hurricane of Hal comes at you non-stop in this hilarious and introspective look at, just one example of specific insanity, we are learning seems to be emblematic of this bizarre world we all have been thrust into. Through all the twists and turns, Hal’s shrewd exuberance ebbs and flows, as he recounts one shocking memory after the next; luckily we are all laughing too hard to delve too deeply into the damage done perhaps, by well-meaning, but very flawed parents. Maybe the point is, it’s this kind of damage that can be refined, and eventually, merged into an authentic and beautiful appreciation for life.
