The framing as a “school project” is brilliant, especially since her whole family these worked for the schools. Her character work is seamless, consistent, funny, and distinct, with the simplest changes of wardrobe and wig triggering entirely different women. And she gets to show off her full range the way she’s written this—her dancing, her singing, and her fabulous impressions. But the biggest thing I keep coming back to was her authenticity—the feel that these weren’t just characters, but genuine, full people with full lives and philosophies, strengths and weaknesses.
What I didn't like
Not one damn thing. This is perfect for what it is. If anything, I could watch another 30ish minutes of this, easy.
My overall impression
So many solo shows about family focus on trauma, misfortune, tough times, etc. Sidney has crafted a truly wonderful tribute to the many Ms. Edwards in her life, one that’s a unique blend of hilarious, warm, touching, and genuine. Her portrayals of the women in her family as they are, good and bad, strict and sweet, uplifting and challenging, is a warm, sweet, and funny tribute to their influence on her as a radiant, charismatic, and gifted artist. Bravo!
