Much of the Shakespearean canon has been done so many times, and so famously, that actors and directors will inevitably be influenced by prior interpretations for good or ill. But with a show seen as rarely as this one, you have to go your own way! The Porters' cutting is smartly done and well paced. The direction is sharp and the acting is passionate, skillful and clear. The black box setting doesn't limit the production but draws your attention to the text. This is a perfect way to see Edward III for any Shakespeare completist....

An excellent, streamlined production of a rarely performed Shakespeare play. Even though "Edward III" has been accepted as canon for over thirty years, this play is seldom even studied, let alone performed. Kudos to The Porters of Hellsgate for including it in their Herculean task of performing all of Shakespeare's plays!...

Very well staged, with minimalist but effective costumes, great lighting and choreography. The actors extracted the appropriate amount of drama, pathos and humor from the script. It was very "comprehensible" Shakespeare, even for the uninitiated, with actors using nonverbal cues and gestures, and expressive intonation to get the meanings across clearly. At the same time, they also were able to capture the beauty and wit of Shakespeare's writing....
