What I liked
The production was overall quite impressive. I loved the live period-appropriate musical ensemble, the costumes, and the evocative digital backdrops that provided immersion and a sense of time and place. The score was enjoyable and well-crafted, and lyrics intelligent and well-suited to the setting. Some of the cast have tremendous performance chops, particularly in vocals.
What I didn't like
Character was sometimes lost to spectacle. Songs sometimes dwelled on things we already knew, sapping story momentum.
My overall impression
An earnest period mystery-romance musical with colorful and lively characters, top-notch production values, and a sophisticated score. Very reminiscent of Broadway shows from the 80s and 90s.
