What I liked

I loved the simplicity of this two-hander! Both actresses allowed the WORDS and their CONNECTION to each other and the material do the heavy-lifting for this fringe show. While the show didn’t boast bells and whistles in the technical elements, it more than made up for them in the acting and writing!! I’m not sure how often real-life parents and children do pieces this raw and funny together, but Roost gives me hope that we can see more of them in the future! Also… PEACH YOGURT for the WIN!!

What I didn't like

My biggest nit-picking would be a bit on the blocking front. It would have been nice to have a few more chairs on stage or a bit more direction to minimize some of the repetition of movement. After a while of seeing the relationship between nurse and patient, I visually wanted something different happening between them physically.

My overall impression

Roost is a zany dark comedic play within a play that showcases a most formidable real-life Mother/Daughter duo! The writing was fresh, contemporary, at times hysterically funny and other times, tear inducing. And the acting… oh, the acting by both women was razor sharp, edgy, and dramatic in the best ways!! What would it be like to have a conversation with a character you write and get honest feedback? Perhaps it’s just as honest as a chat with a parent!
