This show was so relatable. We’ve probably all met people like these characters at some point in our lives. Certainly, we’ve all experienced heartbreak. Watching Micah struggle through her love life was painful to watch at times because I was constantly rooting for her to be safe and feel loved. The complicated relationship dynamics between Micah, Seth, and Ry were compelling and the slow but sure reveal of Ry’s dangerous side kept me on the edge of my seat the entire show. He’s been a danger since his introduction… after all, he does carry a sword with him everywhere he goes… but the worst thing he does to Micah doesn’t even include his weapon. There’s a push and pull to their friendship because at times it has been loving on the surface, but there’s a darkness underneath. It felt scarily accurate to real life, where things get messy and not everything is black and white. This was a nuanced, raw piece and I especially appreciated the mirror they held up to society as it felt very true to my real life experience as a woman.
I loved the world they created with this intriguing concept of emotional weapons. The makeup and prosthetics were gory and realistic, making it visually striking. They had some minimal set pieces and normally I enjoy a bit more onstage to set the scene but in this case I was so captivated by the performances that it didn’t matter.
What I didn't like
There was a fair amount of blood, but always more blood! I’d also love to see the relationship between Micah and Cora a little bit more, as their friendship and shared experience as women ultimately provides healing and catharsis for both of them.
My overall impression
Heart Held at Knife Point was a visceral relationship drama that imagines what life would be like if our emotional defenses came with actual physical weapons. The acting was superb, the makeup and effects were BLOODY brilliant, and the ending was a beautiful tribute to the power of connection and empathy in the healing process.
