The initial situation is genuinely clever and nuanced, presented with a good blend of sincerity and humor. The score has a number of ear-catchy tracks (revealing the author’s hip hop background). The cast embrace their roles with verve and empathy, keeping us grounded as things become increasingly weird.
What I didn't like
Some of the early numbers were full of important information, and would have benefitted from slower lyrical pacing. (Rapid-fire hip hop delivery works best when we have an idea of what the performers are going to say beforehand.)
I’m not sure we needed the big twist! The initial premise of the show is rich with possibility, and I kind of wanted to stick with it rather than veer off into different territory.
My overall impression
A warm and wacky family comedy with catchy songs and several wild-ride plot twists.
