The Booby Prize

Laugh out loud funny, smart, and endearingly self-deprecating, Czerner's solo show embodies post-third-wave-feminism ideals hidden behind a mountain (or two) of zingers. A studied yet charming performer, she brings the audience on a fast-paced journey from failure to empowerment without preaching, for a total experience women of all ages can, and should, relate to.... full review

Voices from Chornobyl Jr.

I encourage parents and educators to take advantage of this incredible resource that is equal parts entertaining and informative. In under 40 minutes, the audience is welcomed into the very relatable world of a young girl and her family who once lived near the Chornobyl nuclear power plant. Utilizing simple metaphors, song, and language that is always clear and never condescending, complex issues such as radiation poisoning and nuclear power are defined, replacing fear with knowledge and impartin... full review

Four Clowns: Romeo & Juliet

I laughed so hard for so long, I had to stop laughing. It hurt! Much like the raw, adolescent anger of the fatefully doomed characters Romeo + Juliet and the violence of their stupid, dueling families just plain hurts. Irreverent and not for prudish audiences, 4 Clowns brings their patented brand of fast-paced, comedic physical-theatre to poke fun at the traditional tale, weaving a world that is one part boy band, one part reality tv, a pinch tragedy and 100% fun. This troupe is bringing somethin... full review

Porter's Macbeth "a parody"

kat primeau · June 17, 2011 uncertified reviewer
Hands-down the most exciting show I've seen at the fringe this year, Porter's Macbeth condenses, physicalizes, and adds a great deal of humor and humanity to the Scottish Play. From the flurry of viewpoints and clown-inspired action at the onset, to the well-deserved dramatic end, this production sweeps audiences away on a highly-theatrical journey both familiar and refreshingly new. Told from the perspective of Lord Scottish Play's drunken Porter, the talented ensemble owns every single moment, ... full review

Maizy: A Fable

Cowboys & Indians blew me away last year with Wolf Girls, and at the onset of "Maizy" I was delighted to find that their latest production is equally enchanting and theatrical. Beautiful make up and set and fantastic original music underscores this traditional tale of a wide-eyed dreamer whose dreams are dashed in Hollywood. Check it out for truly unique fare - and hilarious faery humor!... full review

How Did I Get Here?

kat primeau · June 14, 2011 uncertified reviewer
Laura's dark humor pushes boundaries and raises a lot of interesting and ironic questions, but when during the preview performance, she rushed through setting up the construct for the show - asking "How did I get here?!" - I found myself floundering to understand where in time we were and why exactly I, as audience member, should care. I laughed out loud, I marveled at her bare naked honesty and comedic chutzpah, but ultimately I felt the piece needs more feedback, more development, and a couple ... full review

Evolution of a Kiss

A shining example of one-person-show-done-right, Cynthia's performance was relatable, intimate, and full of charming humor. Beautifully structured and smartly directed, she invites the audience to participate in the journey of three women, each uniquely of their time and place. The production only faltered, in my humble opinion, when the same devices were repeated - thematically, the slow-motion seduction for each character brought a union to the piece, but after seeing how capable Cynthia is as ... full review

Super Sidekick: The Musical

Another gem from Gregory Crafts! Follow adorkable superhero sidekick Inky as he conquers his fears, outsmarts the bad guys, and wins over the princess, with some great original musical numbers along the way. I'd love to see this piece play a big house, and encourage fringers to check it out in this very important development period. Audience interaction and a lot of goofiness make the play exciting and fun - and I'm certain the little girl giggling behind me the whole time agreed. Bring your fami... full review

Endgame

Simple, sweet, and with a delightful twist at the end, this is a theatrical treat for fans of "No Exit" and other existential riddles. I thought I knew what was coming but was pleasantly surprised to find myself wrong. A charming addition to the fringe melange, it's easy to fit into the schedule at less than 30 minutes.... full review

The Yogamerican Dream

This is a review of the production of YD that was at the Elephant in 2010: Playfully directed by Jeremy Aluma, The Yogamerican Dream paints a hilarious and heartwarming picture of the multifarious contemporary yoga practitioner. I laughed out loud, I marveled at Gates' yogic abilities, and I enjoyed the ride as she shared many perspectives and glided from one unique character to the next. The director and yogi have continued to develop the piece since I last saw it, and I look forward to se... full review
