Endgame

Basically, all of those people who say JUST GO SEE THIS? They. Are. Dead. On. Seriously, people. This man can write a fiercely tight, multi-layered tale that comes in at 1/2-hour (!!!) and deserves no spoilers. The actors who bring it home are superb. Dude. Awesome. ... full review

Super Sidekick: The Musical

This show is a complete delight! A charming cast, lovely songs that complement the story without stopping it, all presented with a wonderful balance of real-world sincerity and complete over the top - as the best musicals and superhero comics do. The premise you can see on the show's main page. What I very much liked was how Crafts managed to integrate more than one 'After School Special' message in the story without being all Mjölnir about it (a trick those After School Specials never manage... full review

When it hit me that Kellydawn Malloy has no idea which of the stories she will tell in recounting Hutton's life (some of them emotionally hefty) until the audience members, playing press, asked questions at random from a long list, I was even more impressed with this show. The actor has be *really* strong to be able to range between pep and heartbreak without benefit of safely following a script that controls/guides the whole. At the show I saw, the final one, an audience member threw out a ... full review

I need more stars. I could listen to this man sit there and tell stories about his experiences during the mythical era of NYC all day long. Just phenomenal. Go see this!!... full review

That Great & Dreadful Day-Tall Tales From The American Swamp

DO NOT LET A CHANCE TO SEE THIS PASS YOU BY! The band is tight. The weaving between past/present was virtually seamless. The story/stories is/are hilarity when needed, moving when that vibe is called for, and kinda scary when the story gets to the part where the characters can do nothing more than submit to a higher power and Plea. (Know that's vague, but I don't know how to describe the specifics quickly without spoilers.) I *loved* their energy; felt like I was eavesdropping in on a famil... full review

55 Minutes of Sex, Drugs and Audience Participation

I don't know how on earth Lieberman and Niemi manage to be funny, touching, moving and educational (at times) all at once - with stories chosen on the spot by a random audience member - but it is an *incredible* hour. You'll get different stories each time but I'm gonna guess all of them are probably knockouts. They are also all true, pulled from their lives, which *clearly* are more interesting than anybody I know. Hippies had a lot of fun back then. Our audience heard stories about a man lea... full review

Basic Training by Kahlil Ashanti

Wow. This was not at *all* what I thought it would be. It is so *much* deeper. Particularly amazing is that as Kahlil Ashanti careens between hilarity describing the people he encountered along this true-life journey, and highlighting some pretty intense stuff dealing with family trauma, he *never* loses the story. It all builds to a point. It's glorious. I'm still in wow mode. The ending is just perfect. So fine. It's just great. Go see this show and bring everyone you know! ... full review

I pretty much loved every single minute of this hilarious tale of race, sexuality and his stubborn attempt to not engage in family draaaaammmaaaaa. Figured it would be good, but *had no idea* it would be *that* good! Les Kurkendaal does these amazing shorthand descriptions of all of these people he had to deal with as he walks you through what happened to him and it just works perfectly. Another thing I like about it was this could easily have been a mean show, but it wasn't! As he is mocking ... full review

The Funeral Crasher

Was so glad I was able to get out of work in time to see this because it sounded interesting. It's exactly as advertised - a collection of stories about people who dealt with a funeral of some kind. Stacy Mayer is flat-out charming, and the impressions she does of the different people she zips back and forth between are a hoot. I particularly liked the boyfriend, not just how she played him but the story he told. It was one of the shortest in the collection, but among the three strongest. ... full review

It is not easy to tell people how they can be sometimes, but apparently Jacquetta Szathmari has no fear of being shanked behind the theater, because in this trio of linked stories that's exactly what she does. It's hilarious, dangerously true, and has the added bonus of serving as critically needed education for dual audiences, but the lessons drop wrapped in engaging entertainment. There's a couple of lines in this piece that will stay with me for a long time. The essay in the middle w... full review
