Black When I Was A Boy

Cooper Bates embodies young and old, black and white, male and female. These skillful acting transitions are in service of his story about growing up in a predominantly white community and navigating shame and isolation into a place of connection and self-pride. Especially because in the current reactionary American climate I... full review

A Beast/A Burden

This was an interesting piece about an artist that I re-remembered once the show began. Unreal City was totally engaging. I loved being part of a fantasy that felt dangerous and fun Simultaneously. The characters were believable in their own surreal way. I enjoyed the emmersive quality of having my own unique experience and following the story as I chose. The poetry was sometimes a bit challenging but I liked it. ... full review

I loved Jonathan's way of engaging with his audience throughout. I felt included in his experiences and the various stories and moods throughout the piece. Funny most of the time but also had some shifts into moments of vulnerability. For LA people (which I am not) there was a lot of recognition of the local scene and some of the issues of this city.... full review
