Nathan Wellman

Oh, Lorraine!

I went in not knowing anything about the plot. The opening dinner date brilliantly drip-feeds us red flag after red flag about this couple. Wait, why is he called the "Butcher of 13th street?" And why is this lady so maniacal about "repeating" the date until she thinks it's going well? So much of the hilarity and heart of this story springs out of moments where any normal person would flee the date (while possibly screaming at the top of their lungs), but these moments only make our leads even... full review

In Conclusion:

Yet another example of the Puckwit Gang's unstoppable creativity. They are the masters of movement, telling stories that matter with theatric flourish and ingenuity. In Conclusion, In Conclusion bottles up two child murderers with the prosecutor and their attorney in a single, fluid space. The four of them feel like a perverse family, and the formalities of courtroom monologues feel like personal confessions. A meditation on capital punishment that ends in a bit of audience participation that... full review

Crunch

A deeply personal play that was clearly an intense labor of love for all involved. The sillier Fringe stuff is all well and good, but THIS is the kind of art that I love best about the Fringe. Truly a unique story I have never seen before... full review

Dracula's Taste Test

Wacky, irreverent, and not for the squeamish. (But why would a squeamish person go to a Dracula show?) The cast's ghoulish energy is infectious, and the house was gleefully singing along for the whole show.... full review

Jane Austen's Emma Frankenstein

Loved this when it started at Sacred Fools, and it's every bit as sharp and hilarious on the Fringe stage. An all-star cast squeezing every possible laugh possible out of an off-the-wall parody.... full review

Hypnosis and the Performer

nathan wellman · June 11, 2018 uncertified reviewer
A fascinating overview into the basics of hypnosis and the surprisingly high amount of overlap between that and the art of acting. To paraphrase McIntyre: "Much like acting, hypnotism is the art of distracting the conscious to access the subconscious"... full review

Tilt

The show's wildness is like deliberately jumping out of a plane without a parachute just for the adrenaline rush. Two rock star performances slamming against each other in a way that makes the audience feel just as vulnerable as the actors. (In a good, edge-of-your-seat-creepy way, not in a oh-my-God-make-it-stop kind of way.)... full review

Magnum Opus Theatre Presents

nathan wellman · June 24, 2014 uncertified reviewer
There's something so uniquely, hilariously creative within the hellscape of shitty writing that Magnum Opus lampoons. There are certain places most experienced writers don't go because they know... well... that it's a terrible idea. Not so with Magnum Opus, and every terrible choice leads to new levels of madness beautifully bottled into humor by the decidedly un-shitty actors, who commit to the nonsense as if it were Shakespeare. Expect to lurch forward with plenty of those extra-obnoxious "H... full review
