Jenny Lind Presents P.T. Barnum

As in her prior show about Maria Callas, Shelley Cooper proves to be a talented interpreter of artistic personalities. In this show we're treated to a whistlestop-tour autobiography of a 19th century mega-celebrity, an idealist who believed she was on a divine mission to help the world with her voice but who struggled in a hyper-commercialized US tour. A talented soprano in her own right, Cooper alternates narrative with operatic and art song excerpts, giving us a taste of what made Lind a smash ... full review

I had a great time watching this show but trying to summarize it hurts my brain. Imagine if the cards from Trivial Pursuit: 20th Century TV Edition came to life, were imbued with manic intentionality and expert choreography, then did a cabaret slash group therapy session about the imaginary faked death of a beloved TV sidekick while periodically breaking into catchy yet poignant songs and... sorry, my brain is hurting. ... full review

Batter Up: Double Play

You know how you have a friend who is so fervidly and joyously into something that you get caught in the undertow of their enthusiasm? This is that friend in Fringe show form. You don't need to catch every arcane reference about America's favorite sport to recognize true enthusiasm — and if it's slightly tinged with mania, it ends up being more endearing for it. Come reveal in another person's unabashed zest and human-encyclopedic knowledge.... full review

Valley Of Light

This is a work by young artists and it therefore has to be greeted with appreciation and encouragement. It is a vast and ambitious piece (and production), an effort to imbue a mythological fantasy story with poignant and relatable human emotions. It's accompanied by a sometimes-diagetic acoustic score, admirably by live musicians. I'd like to see what the creators do in the future, as there's a lot of talent on display here.... full review

I went all the way down to the Broadwater to support Blake. I didn't even want to go, but I felt guilty throwing away his promotional card after he spent 20 minutes describing his show to me at the Plunge. And then THIS happens?... full review

Part biography of the grandfather of supernatural horror lit, part historical reenactment of vignettes from Lovecraft's life, and part exploration of how we can connect to works of art despite having strong issues with their creators. Queen Mab's Alarmingly Mandatory Bridal Shower

Charmingly eccentric, larger-than-life yet ultimately addressing real human foibles. Delivered with chuckle-inducing grandiosity and delightfully expressive personality by Elise Dewsberry. (It's always fun when seeing someone you know onstage and having the performance be so thorough that you forget that you know them, and only perceive the character .)... full review
