AFGHANISTAN IS NOT FUNNY

Outstanding one-man show, brilliantly performed ! Henry Naylor travelled to Afghanistan to gather material for a Fringe show, accompanied by a friend and an Afghani guide. This is a true-life visit to Afghanistan, with harrowing projected photographs of the stark, nihilistic landscape dotted with the leftover discards of war. Naylor has a commanding stage presence, and uses the stage fully with great blocking and physicalization, and of course, his impressive British (Yorkshire) accent to tell...

Shubop-Dubay-Had: The No Matter Watt PreQuel

“Shubop” is the musical prequel to Gordon’s musical play of last year, “No Matter Watt.” The cast is quite good, with some great singing and dancing. Gordon’s introductory monologue is quite moving, and really is the “book” explaining the plot of the musical numbers. I would love to see both halves of this play put together, which Gordon is planning to do. Recommended !...

“25 Plays Per Hour” is just that – 25 2-minute plays, especially written for this show, each with a beginning, middle, and end. The ensemble cast is very good, and the direction and pacing are brilliant and lighting-speed. Highly recommended ! Includes a musical play !...

This is exactly what you want at the Fringe -- the silliest, funniest, edgiest, off-the-wall production ever. A narrator explains it's a staged reading/improvisation of a combination of "Moby Dick" and "Peer Gynt," while the participants admit to knowing very little about either work, and put on a series of hilarious scenes lit with non sequiturs in some kind of a theatre space or large meeting room. I'm not sure if "The Cleanup Crew" is doing this as a workshop production or the final result,...

Great performance ! Azo performs all the characters she met during her two years in the Peace Corps in Morocco, with sharp delineations of movement, accent, and personality for each character, getting sharply and precisely from narrator to character. There's also lots of heart in this story -- great show !...

Wow ! Draws us into the times and characters of F. Scott Fitzgerald’s “The Great Gatsby.” In a library filled with atmospheric books and artworks, one of the characters walks among us reciting the opening pages of “Gatsby” while a world-class bassist performs solo jazz – and then we go to dinner at Daisy’s !...

Mostly scripted, partly improvised, this tells the story of an Arab-American improv troupe. The improv of the troupe actually improves over the arc of the show ! Great chemistry between the performers, draws us into the concerns and lifestyles of Arab-Americans and improvisers everywhere....

Outstanding show ! Tanya is brilliant as all of her sharply-drawn characters, getting cleanly from character to character with sharp physicalizations. The unobtrusive videos add to the atmosphere, especially the suddenly intrusive character in her head, Dysmorphina. Highly recommended !...

Here’s the genius unscripted monologue of the Fringe ! Naturalistic film performance, outstanding blocking, hilarious malfunctioning props, heartbreaking admissions. You have to see this !...
