The Mayor's Debate of Tranquility, Nebraska

Hilarious! Great writing and performances. It has a unique angle that elevates it above the typical political commentary. Made me think about some big questions afterward, such as what does civility really mean?... full review

...or Dare - wherein lies the truth?

jonathan wickremasinghe-kuhn · June 23, 2015 certified reviewer
Both of these short plays examine the idea of what is "truth" and is it always the most important thing. The first play did a great job of giving us just enough details to keep us invested while dangling a few mysteries out of reach so we were anxiously waiting to see what was really going on. Though one character was more aggressive than the other, they were evenly matched in their battle over who was right. The second play was bizarre in a really intriguing way, and I kept waiting for th... full review

KINK

This is an intriguing premise (that's what got me to attend in the first place), but it doesn't deliver in the way I expected. Which is fine, I love a surprise, but the "twist" that's revealed at the end meant that none of the preceding actions for one of the characters made any sense. (Plus that character seemed to be all over the place in general.) The story also lingered on the same beats for far too long given the short run time. I think there's something worthwhile in the concept, but this p... full review

The Songs of the Fall

They did a great job with the set design, particularly utilizing the characters to change it between scenes. However, this was the only element that stood out to me. Most of the songs sounded similar. For anyone familiar with the story of Adam & Eve, a lot of the story is retreading ground that's been covered lots of times before, and it doesn't mix it up or provide a unique spin on it. The parts of the story set in modern day felt very pat, none of it was that gripping or engaging. I think it... full review

The 7th Annual One-Man Show World Championships

jonathan wickremasinghe-kuhn · June 23, 2015 certified reviewer
This show delivers on its premise and then some, skewering different types of one-man shows with deliciously over-the-top performances and absolutely ridiculous metaphors. The writing is stellar and had me laughing over and over again. All of the performers completely embody their characters. Whether you love or hate one-man shows, you should see this!... full review

Booze, Balls and Bluegrass: A Daughter's Journey

Even though I've never experienced having to say goodbye to a parent or help care for an ailing one, I was still able to find something to relate to in this story. Perhaps it's because Laura's recreation of her father reminded me of my own Southern relatives. She did a fantastic job of bringing us into the story and mixing the perfect amount of humor and sadness. ... full review

Thumb Wars

There are some great performances and very witty writing showcased here, and it picks the perfect moment to end things. Clocking in at under 30 minutes, it's easily something you an fit between other shows in your schedule. Given the short run-time, I was surprised that it took a relatively long time to get to the titular "thumb wars" and lingered on some beats for awhile, but once it focuses on miscommunication and misinterpretation, it really hits its stride.... full review

The Video Games

As a fan of both The Hunger Games and video games, I really enjoyed a lot of the jokes in this show. Knowledge of The Hunger Games isn't really necessary to understand it, but if you don't have at least a passing knowledge of video games, particularly those from the 80's, you might find yourself at a bit of a loss. The fight choreography was OUTSTANDING, particularly in the one-on-one battles. The stand-out was Link, who was fully committed to making the classic sound effects and had a lin... full review

A Very Modern Marriage

jonathan wickremasinghe-kuhn · June 19, 2015 uncertified reviewer
This show was a ton of fun and had a quick pace, witty dialogue, and performers who were giving it their all the entire time. It was not afraid to go dark, and even downright cruel, while still maintaining its comedic integrity. There were a number of laugh-out loud moments. There was one plot turn that was quite a leap, and I wish there had been a bit more set-up for it. But it tied into the rest of the story as opposed to being a one-off thing, so in the end it all connected wonderfully.... full review

5 Sirens: Beware of Rocks

jonathan wickremasinghe-kuhn · June 19, 2015 certified reviewer
Excellent lighting and sound design, some great performances, and of course wonderful writing on display from the five playwrights who work is featured. The pieces are so different that everyone is guaranteed to find something they love. I was pleasantly surprised that my favorite wound up being one I would not have expected based on the description. And I enjoyed that most of them were capable of mixing in some heartfelt, deep emotions along with humor (or vice versa).... full review
