Tommy Cooper: I Didn't Let You Down, Did I?

erik engman · July 02, 2022 certified reviewer
Fantastic show. Tommy Cooper came to life in this wonderful play which masterfully juxtaposed his comedy and his inner doubt. The jokes and magic were fun, and the deep reflection on his life brought a tear to my eye at the end. ... full review

Beowulf

One man. One chair. One glad of water. But yet for that hour of masterful storytelling I was transported to an ancient land full of dragons, demons, heroes, and kings. The language, for the most part, was rich and colourful. The use of the very small space conveyed everything from epic battlefields to cramped caves. Highly recommend. ... full review

Housewife '52

Wow. An amazing show about housewives withering away in 1952, set to music, singing and movement. Highly theatrical, which was a welcome experience. The cast was excellent. The music was great, and at times haunting. The use of minimal lighting at times accentuated the mood and the emotion. Highly recommend.... full review

The Universe (101)

A really wonderful show about a clown giving a lecture on his machine that brings back a German lecturer from the 1800s. What ensues is a magnificent mix of slapstick, silliness, magic and hypnotism. I loved it. There were a lot of kids there in the audience who just ate it up, but it was perfect for adults.I smiled the whole way through. A MUST SEE. ... full review

The Word

I saw bits of this originally a few years ago as a part of Sacred Fools' late night show "Serial Killers", so I was familiar with the characters going in. What Victor did in the intervening years was to take the characters and weave them into a funny, powerful show about redemption and living on through the impact you leave on others. I did not expect to be so moved by the last 20 minutes. Simply beautiful. The way the show crafts these silly characters to be people we care about by the e... full review

Rayn: An Electronic Burlesque Experience

You are promised a burlesque show, but what you get with this is much more interesting and wonderful. The show is basically a concert. An intimate concert with dancing and burlesque. And intimate is the key. She has no problem bringing the show to each member of the audience so we feel included and spoken to. Some members were given glasses and draped with a flashy boa, some were spoken to directly with eye contact. And she wasn't shy about dancing with people, sitting in their laps or taking... full review

I am a friend of Richard's and also a fan if his music for a long time. I always find his show to be a highlight of the Fringe. His songs range from funny, to poignant, to satirical, to downright silly (I blame the monkeys). Well worth your time. 17 songs all in an hour, and maybe a bonus.... Check him out. You won't be sorry. ... full review

Death and Coffee

This was my first foray in to on-on-one immersive theater, and I wasn't sure to expect. I heard vague stories from previous years that Annie's piece were very intense, but this one said it was PG, so I was up for anything. The show was very simple. A conversation over coffee or tea. I was a bit nervous and spent way too much time choosing a mug, (Sorry!) But when we got to sitting down and got in to the story it was really magical. A wonderful story about family, love, disappointment, and the... full review

The Bitch Is Back: An Elton John Cabaret

erik engman · June 04, 2018 certified reviewer
This cabaret is five wonderful women singing about 15 Elton John songs - with costumes and funny glasses galore. That's really it. A couple anecdotes along the way, but mostly it's just singing the songs. They are wonderful singers, and from the start they encourage audience participation. I had a wonderful time with a room full of people singing Elton John songs. If you think this appeals to you, go see it! I can't recommend this enough. ... full review
