Beneath its cute exterior, Slumber Party is a thirty-minute powerhouse of a play that makes us think about what it means to be truly seen and loved. It is one of the best short plays I’ve ever seen, one that I would rush to see again if the opportunity presents itself. Academia romance meets the Dark Pictures anthology, Kate Shaefer’s ambitious debut packs a lot of plot and characters into its short runtime, and while the story may be better suited to a screenplay, miniseries, or interactive format, it’s still an entertaining show. There are moments of good dramatic tension and some really witty dialogue, but the need to push the plot forward (again due to the constraints of the runtime) doesn’t let us spend much time getting to know the characters deeply. Urgent Care is one of the most polished and professional shows I’ve seen at Fringe so far. Cypress Cai has an amazing directorial eye and managed to navigate a script with several set changes in a small theatre with artistry and ease.
