Happy Hour

This was a wonderfully spent hour of Fringe! Amazing live music plus a great ensemble of actors embodying very real characters. Simply executed, using just what was needed to tell this lovely story. A relate-able slice of life, watching stories of humans that we know and/or identify with. It's somehow both fun and sad at the same time. I found myself surprisingly moved. I love the lack of clear resolutions and easy happy endings - just like real life. Definitely recommend!!! ... full review

Riot Grrrl Saves the World

Thank you, thank you Will Play for Food for putting this very important story on the stage. Louisa Hill's beautiful script is such a refreshing and necessary voice. I really enjoyed the language of religion/faith mixing with the grrrl talk, into a kind of magical poetry. I loved the diversity of this awesome all-female cast, and I loved the authentic body-positivity of this production. This is what the Fringe and the theatre world in general (but most especially in LA) needs more of! I love... full review

Twelfth Night, or what you will...

This was a well acted and very fun production of one of my all time favorite plays in the universe. Some incredible performances, beautiful music, and well-spoken Shakespeare to be see here! The Shakespearean language was extremely clear from the entire cast. The language flowed easily and naturally from their mouths -this is obviously a group of actors who know and love their Shakespeare. Stand our performances were: -Mary Ellen Schneider, a BRILLIANT and sincerely funny Olivia, and a ... full review

The Last Temptation of Paula Deen

An interesting show that made me laugh and made me think - always a great combination. Sasha Harris was absolutely fabulous as a hilarious, larger-than-life, and yet fully sincerely vulnerable Paula Deen. Edward Alvarado, Korama Danquah, Tiffanee Hall, Tamika Katon-Donegal, and Wayne Scott play every other character in this story - an amazingly strong ensemble, who leaped from character to character, with beautiful commitment and momentum. (I do wish I had known which actor played which parts ... full review

Kharmful Charms of Daniil Kharms

What a weird, delightful, magical show! I so thoroughly enjoyed it. The cast is enormously talented, a true ensemble, feeding off each others' energy, morphing from character to character. The live music is INCREDIBLE! It touched me on such a vicersal level, and was an integral part of the performance. It really gave this show a full-bodied depth and beauty. My favorite part was the use of simple stage magic. No fancy special effects, but through creative theatre, so many truly magical m... full review

DRUNK TANK: THE MUSICAL

I thoroughly enjoyed Drunk Tank: The Musical. I wasn't totally sure what to expect - would it be dark and "sobering"? sassy and silly? crude and rude? It was a little bit of all of the above and I liked it for that reason. The strongest part of the show was the music itself (very important, for a musical). The songs were beautiful, unexpectedly deep and moving. Seriously amazing work by composers Edan Frieberger and Kyle Jackson, and beautifully sung by the whole cast, who sounded fantastic to... full review

Consider the Night

What a beautiful show! Please do yourself a favor and catch this if you have the chance. A fascinating adaptation of three different literary works into interweaving stories, that left me wanting more. These are fascinating, relevant stories from voices we do not hear often enough. The whole ensemble of actors was great, with particularly (and oh so refreshingly) strong yet nuanced female characters. More of this, please! Lots of great dialogue and beautiful moments, both visually and verb... full review

THE CONDUCT OF LIFE

If you have the chance, you must catch this show! I'm still spinning from last night's incendiary performance. It's not a show for everyone and it also should include a TRIGGER WARNING for graphic violence/sexual violence. The Vagrancy once again delivers raw, abrasive, relevant theatre, this time with a terrifying, beautiful production of a rarely done, and very important play, 'The Conduct of Life' by Maria Irene Fornes. Sabina Ptasznik's bold choice of material and right-on direct... full review

Seven Seductions of Taylor Swift

carly d. weckstein · June 14, 2014 uncertified reviewer
This is one fabulously weird ride. At first the subject matter (pop culture? swifties?) seems like it could be cutesy and superficial, but NO -- this play is very relevant and resonates with me about our culture's freaky obsession with celebrity, as well as our programmed ideals about love and relationships. First of all, I LOVE the idea of having seven female playwrights give voices to these seven celebrity ex-boyfriends of Taylor Swift. Women have a lot to say about gender roles and rela... full review

WHITE HOT

Now I do not say this often, because I'm pretty damn picky about my theatre. But you must go see this show! It is... well, WHITE HOT. Great: directing, acting, design, material. The pieces came together beautifully in a unified vision. This show is one hell of a ride, and I was on board from the first line to the last image - dark, gritty, sexy, painful, weird - and FUNNY, darkly darkly funny - dealing with (my favorite themes) gender roles, relationships, love, sex and violence - and two fa... full review
