"Black and Blue" is an unflinching tour de force, birthed from the immensely gifted mind of Jamar Gilbert. The actor, the writer, and the play contain multitudes: "One body. Many truths." Gilbert gives credence to each one--each truth--individually, letting the many arguments breathe and boil off in a kind of socratic seminar of the soul. A creative, well imagined exploration of the arbitrariness of life and death. "Are our deities really omnipotent, or do they just tell us they are?" it asks, and what a fun question. Buoyed by Tiago Santos's endearing and grounded performance as Finn, the show takes us on a wacky, unpredictable journey in search of a truth that both is and is not at the heart of things.... full review
